"My Neighbor Totoro" is a classic Japanese children's film by Hayao Miyazaki
about a magical forest-creature named Totoro, who lives near a family with
two young girls that has just moved to the neighorhood.
I (=Dave Tallman) borrowed a children's book made from the movie from my
Japanese teacher, and I have translated it here.
Note: I am experimenting with "furigana" here - spacing out the words so
I can put phonetic readings above the kanji. The readings are provided in
the books. See the phonetic character table if you have trouble reading the
furigana characters.

Totoros are creatures who have lived in Japan from long before the time of
man. They eat acorns and other nuts and live a care-free life in the forest.
But usually people can't see them. Generally they sleep during the daytime,
and at night they like to play an ocarina. They are able to fly. "Totoro"
is the name Mei gave to them.

Catbus
The bus that Totoros ride. People cannot see it, but when the Catbus passes
close by it feels like a whirlwind is blowing. It has 12 legs. It can also
fly, so it can run over water.

Putt putt putt rattle rattle, chug chug chug rattle rattle. The little truck
is full to the brim with baggage, advancing down the middle of the narrow
country road. Today is a Sunday in May. Satsuki and Mei are moving, you see.
第一章 おばけやしき
Chapter 1: The Haunted House
「おとうさん、すてきな ところね！」
「ねっ、おとうさん。」
サツキとメイが いいました。田んぼや
畑。みどりの 森。なんだか たのしい
ことが はじまりそう……。
サツキとメイは、わくわくして います。
"Daddy, it's a wonderful place, isn't it!" "Isn't it, Daddy," said Satsuki
and Mei. Rice paddies and farmlands. Green forests. It seemed like something
fun was starting. Setsuki and Mei were thrilled.
「さあ、ついたよ。」おとうさんの こえに、

ふたりは とびだしました。草ばうばうの

にわの むこうに、ふるばけた 家が たって

います。もう、なん年も 人が すんで
いなかったのでしょう。
"Well, here we are," said Father, and the two of them leaped out. The old
weathered house stood beyond a garden overgrown with grass. It looked like
no-one had lived in it for years.
「わあっ、ばろ～！」

"Oooh, it's old!"
"It looks like a haunted house!"
But even though it looked like a haunted house to them, Satsuki and Mei really
liked it.

"Oh Mei, look!" said Satsuki, pointing to a mountain of thick forest near
the house. At the very top was a huge, huge tree. "Wow, it's big..."

くすのきだよ。」おとうさんが、家の 雨戸を

As they were staring at it, Father said "That's the Camphor Tree of Tsuka
forest," opening the sliding door of the house.

"Say, please open the door on the other side," Father said, as he handed
Satsuki the key.

Satsuki and Mei were full of excitement. They ran to the back door and opened
it with the rusty key.

「あれえ、中は まっくら……。」

ものすごく たくさんの まっくろな
かたまりが、いっせいに、だいどころの
おくへ にげて いったでは ありませんか。
"Hey, it's pitch dark in here," they thought. But at that instant, whissh!
Wasn't that a whole lot of awful black globs scurrying away all at once into
hidden places in the kitchen?

ふたりは かおを 見あわせ、おもいきり
さけびました。「わあ～～っ！」
でも、だいどころは、しーんとしずまり
かえって います。おそるおそる 中へ
はいっていきましたが、もう、なーんにも
いないようです。
"Did you see that? Just now."
"Uh-huh. Wonder if they were ghosts?"
The two girls looked at each other, gathered their courage and yelled, "Yaaaah!"
But the kitchen returned to silence and stillness. They went in cautiously,
but there still seemed to be nothing, nothing at all.
きょろきょろして いると、おとうさんが

As they were searching restlessly, Father came along.
"Hey, there's work to do. Next, we should open the second-floor windows.
I wonder where the door to the stairs is?"
"Um, the second floor?"
"There are stairs?"
Their eyes lit up and they started looking for the stairs.
"Mei, I found them!"
それにしても、なんて くらい かいだん
でしょう……。と、その とき。こん、こん、

But what a dark stairway it was... And then, at that moment: tap, tap, taap.
Something fell down from the pitch-dark top of the stairs. It was an acorn.

There was something alive up there! Both of them stared up into the darkness.
"Mei, let's go and see."
"Uh-huh."
二かいは まっくら、なんにも 見えません。
サツキは、いそいで まどを あけました。

ぎ、ばたん。あかるい 光が さしこむと,
うしろのほうで ざざ――っと くろい
ものが！ また いた！ メイは、うしろの
かべを にらみました。
The second floor was pitch-dark, they couldn't see anything. Satsuki hurried
and opened the window. Creak, thud. As bright sunlight shone in, from behind
there was a "whissh" and there were the black things! There they were again!
Mei glared at them as they went behind the wall.
そと
外では、おとうさんが、せっせと にもつを
はこんでいます。
「おとうさーん、この うち、なにか いるよー。」
Outside, Father was diligently carrying in luggage.
"Daaddy, there are *things* in the house."
サツキの こえに、おとうさんは、まどを
見あげました。
「そりゃあ すごいぞ！おばけやしきに
すむのが、おとうさんの ゆめだったんだ。
おおっとっとっとっ……。」
Father looked up at the window when he heard Satsuki's voice.
"Wow, that's amazing! We're living in a real haunted house, just like I've
always dreamed. Whoooops..."

大きな にもつを かかえ、おとうさんは、
ころびそうです。
Father was carrying a big box and he almost fell.
て
「たいへん！手つだわなくちゃ。」サツキは
した
あわてて 下へ おりて いきました。でも、
メイは、ひとり のこって,かべを
にらみつづけて います。
"How awful! I've got to help him." said Satsuki and she rushed downstairs.
But Mei remained by herself, and kept staring at the wall.
なんだろう、なんだろう。メイは かべに
ちかより、おそるおそる、すきまいに
ゆびを つっこみました。
What could those things be, what could they be? She went up to the wall,
cautiously, and stuck her finger in a crack.
ぶわっ！まくらな ものが いっせいに
とびだし、ざざーーっと てんじょうの
てんじょうの ひびわれの中に にげこんで
いきます。
FOOM! All at once the pitch-black things burst out, "whissh!", and hid in
a crack in the ceiling.
びっくりして つったって いる メイの
まえに、ふわふわと くろい かたまりが
ひと
一つ、おちて きました。
As Mei was standing astonished, a single feather-light black lump floated
down in front of her.
いっ
どうやら 一ぴき、 にげおくれたようです。
ようし……、えいっ！
「つかまえた！ おねえちゃーん。」
おお
メイは、大いそぎで かいだんを おりて
いきました。
It seemed that one of the creatures was slow in finding a hiding place.
Easy.... Aha!
"Caught it! Satsu-ki!"
Mei went downstairs in a big hurry.
むちゅうで はしって いくと、目の まえに
しらない おばあちゃんが たって いました。

「となりの おばあちゃんだよ。手つだいに
きて くれたんだ。」
おとうさんが いいましたが、メイは
それどころじゃ ありません。
She was engrossed in running when a strange old woman appeared before her
eyes. "This is the grandmother from next door. She came to help us out,"
said Father, but Mei was not paying attention.
そっと 手を ひらくと、あれれ、からっぽ。
おまけに りょう手は まくろけ。

足の うらまで まっくろです。
She carefully opened her hands, but they were empty. On top of that, her
hands were black. The soles of her feet were black.
「ああっ、わたしの」 足も まっくろ！」
サツキが さけぶと、おばあちゃんは、

「ほほう、ススワタリが でたな。だあれも いない
いえ
ふるい 家には ススワタリが わいてな
そこらじゅう、ススと ほこりだらけに
しちまうんだ。なあに、しんぱいは いらねえ。
わるさは しないし、人が くれば いつの まにか
いなく なるでな。」
"Aaah, my feet are black, too," cried Satsuki, and then the little old woman
spoke.
"Hoho, there are Dust Bunnies about. They slip into old houses where nobody
lives, spreading soot and dust. Don't worry, now. They are harmless, and
when people come they go away."

うら口に、男の 子が やって きました。

おばあちゃんの うちの カン太 です。
「これ、かあちゃんから ばあちゃんに。」
A boy came to the back door. It was Kanta, from the grandmother's home. "Here,
it's from Ma for Granny."
カン太は、おこったような かおで、サツキに
おかもちを わたすと、とびだして いきました。
Kanta, with an angry expression, handed a basket to Satsuki and immediately
jumped back.
「あ、ちょっと まって。」 サツキが よびとめると…
"Um, wait a second." Satsuki objected...
カン太は、くるりと ふりむいて さけびました。
「やーい、おまえんち、おっぱけやーしき！」
Kanta ran off, turned and yelled. "Yaah, you live in a haunted house!"
「なによ。」サツキ だって、まけては いません。
"How dare you!" retorted Satsuki, not to be defeated.
「べーだ！ 大きな おせわ。」でも、カン太の
もって きた おかもちの なかみは、とても
おいしい おはぎでした。
"Nyaah! Big deal." But the contents of the basket Kanta brought were a very
delicious dessert.
こう して、サツキと メイの っこしは
おわりました。その よるーー。
After that, Satsuki and Mei's moving day was over. That night---.
がさごそ がさごそ、ススワタリも ひっこしです。

ふわふわと 風に のって、塚森の ほうへ
とんで いく。
"Rustle, rustle," the Dust Bunnies were moving out. Light as air, they rode
the wind, flying towards Tsuka Forest.
ほー、ほー。ふくろうでしょうか。塚森から
ふしぎな なきごえが きこえました。
Whoo, whoo. Could that have been an owl? From Tsuka Forest came a mysterious
crying sound.

つぎの 日。サツキと メイと おとうさんは、
おかあさんの おみまいに でかけました。
こんどの ひっこしは、もう すぐ たいいんする

Next day. Satsuki and Mei and Father went out to visit Mother. Because of
this move, when Mother got out of the hospital soon she would come to the
house in the fresh air and beautiful countryside and get well.
「よく きて くれた わね。あたらしい おうちは
どう？」おかあさんは、うれしそうに いいました。
"I'm so glad you came to see me. How is our new house?" Mother looked happy.
「うん。あのね……。」サツキの ないしょばなしを
きくと、おかあさんの かおが、ぱっと かがやきした。
"OK. It's like this..." whispered Satsuki, and Mother's face suddenly became
radiant.
「えっ、おばけやしき？」
「おかあさん、おばけやしき すき？」メイが、
しんぱいそうに たずねます。
"Haunted, really?"
"Mommy, do you like haunted houses?" asked Mei, looking worried.

「もちろんよ！ 早く たいいんして, おばけに
あいたいわ。」
"Of course I do! I'm going to get out of here quickly and see a ghost."
それを きいて、サツキも メイも、ますます
こんどの うちが すきに なります。
Hearing this, Satsuki and Mei liked the house more and more.

そして、おかあさんが、かえって くる 日が、
まちどおしくて たまらないのでした。
After this, waiting for the day when Mother would come home was almost unbearable.
第二章 メイ、トトロに あう
Chapter 2: Mei Meets Totoro
ひ
ある 日の ことです。おねえちゃんは がっこうだし、
おとうさんは おしごと。メイは、ひとりばっちで
あそんで いました。
It was another day. Satsuki was at school and Father was working. Mei was
left playing by herself.
み み
「あっ、どんぐり 見ーっけ。」 ふと 見ると、
あそこにも、その むこうにも、どんぐりが てんてんと
おちて います。
"Ah, I found an acorn." As soon as she saw one, she saw another one over
there, and another across the way, that had been dropped one after another.
メイは、もう むちゅうで どんぐりを ひろって いきました。
Mei became engrossed with picking up acorns as she went along.
なか しろ
すると、くさむらの 中を、白い 小さな とんがったものが
ふた
二つ、こちらへ むかって きたのです。
As she did this, she saw a pair of white, small, sharp things coming her
way from the middle of the field.
み
ありゃりゃ？ あらわれたのは、見た ことも ない へんな
生きもの。わあっ、なんだろう！ メイは わくわく、あとを
つけます。すると、その 白い 生きものは びっくり。
たたたっと にげだしたのです。「まってーっ！」
What was this? A strange kind of creature that she had never seen before
became visible. What could it be? Mei got excited and followed it. At this,
the little white creature got scared. Pitter-patter it ran away. "Wait!"

とっとこ とっとこ, にげこんだのは えんの下。
じーっといらんで いる メイの うしろから、
そろり そろり でて きた ものが ありました。
Skurry, skurry, it found a hiding place under the house. Slowly, slowly it
sneaked out behind the back of the intently watching Mei.
いた！ こんどは 二ひき！ メイが はしりだします。

二ひきは、二ひきは、大あわてで しげみの 中に
にげこえました。トンネルです。しげみの 中には、
トンネルが つづいて います。
Aha! Now there were two of them! Mei started running. In great confusion
they ran away into the thicket. It was a tunnel. The tunnel continued through
the thicket.

Mei's hat fell off and her clothes got dirty. She was engrossed with the
chase. Soon, the two creatures seemed to disapper into the trunk of a big
tree.

At the base of the tree was a dark hole, and by the mouth of it was a single
acorn. Mei tried to get it and her foot slipped. "Waaa---." Whump! Whew,
that was a surprise.
なんて ふしぎな ところ でしょう。木の中だというのに

さしこみ、まわりは、みどりに かがやいて います。
What a strange place it was! Even though she was in a tree, the light flowed
down from the ceiling and all around was glistening green.

でも、もっと おどろいた のは、さっきの 二ひきより

ずーっと 大きなのが ぐうぐう ねむって いた ことです。
くまのような、たぬきのような、ふくろうのような、ふしぎな
い め
生きもの。メイは、目を まんまるく して、ちかよりました。
But, to her surprise there was a creature MUCH bigger than the two she saw
before, asleep and snoring. Like a bear, like a racoon, like an owl, a mysterious
creature. Mei's eyes grew round with astonishment and she went up to it.
「あなたは、だあれ？」メイが たずねると、
そのふしぎな 生きものは、とろーんと目を
あけました。なんだか とっても ねむそうです。
"Who are yoou?" asked Mei, and the strange creature slowly blinked its eyes.
Somehow, it looked very sleepy.
はなを こちょこちゅして みると、大きな
口を あけて ほえました。「どぉ、どぉ、
どろろろろ…。」
When she tried tickling its nose, it opened its huge mouth and roared out,
"DOH, DOH, DORORORORO..."
大きな 口！ すごい風が ふいて きます。
「ひゃあ、とばされるう！」メイは、もう
わくわくして いっしょに ほえました。
What a huge mouth! An amazing blast of air came out.
"Yaah, you're blowing me into the air!" Mei, more excited, roared along with
it.
「ぐわ――お！」
「どぉ、どぉ、ろろろ……。」
"GYAAAAH!"
"DOH, DOH, RORORO..."
「と、と、ろ……？ トトロ！ あなた、トトロって
いうのね。」 メイは、ふわふわの 毛に ねそべって、
やさしく よびかけます。「うふふ、トートロ。」
"To, to, ro...? Totoro! Your name is Totoro, right?" Mei spoke to it gently,
stretching out on the fluffy fur. "Hee hee, Totoro."
その うち、メイの目も とろーんと して きて、
いつのまにか、トトロと いっしょに ぐっすり ねむって
しまいました。
With this, Mei's eyes started slowly blinking too, and before she knew it
she had fallen fast asleep with Totoro.
サツキが がっこうから かえって くると、メイの
すがたが 見えません。しんぱいして さがすと、
しげみの まえに ぼうしが おちて いました。
「おとうさーん、メイの ぼうしが あったよー。」
When Satsuki got home from school, she couldn't see Mei anywhere. When she
got worried and looked for her, she saw the fallen hat in front of the thicket.
"Daaddy, I found Mei's hat!"
ひょいと のぞくと、しげみの 中は トンネルに
なって います。サツキは、ずんずん おくへ はいって
いきました。すると、トンネルが ぽかっと ひるへ
なった ところに メイが たおれて いたのです。
A quick peek into the thicket showed the tunnel it formed. Satsuki zoomed
down it. There, where the tunnel opened wider, she suddenly saw Mei lying
flat on the ground.
「メイ、メイ。」あわてて ゆさぶると、メイは目を
さまし、きょとんと あたりを 見まわしました。
「あれえ、トトロは？」
「トトロ？」
"Mei, Mei!" she called, shaking her in confusion, and Mei woke up and looked
around in a daze.
"Hey, where's Totoro?"
"Totoro?"
そこへ、おとうさんも やって きました。
「メイね、トトロに あったの。ちっちゃいのと、
ちょっと 大きいのと、すごーく 大きくて
こーんな かおの。こっちだよ。」
Just then, Father came along.
"I met Totoros. First a little one, then a bigger one, then a really really
BIG one with a face like this. This way!"
メイは、しげみの おくへ はしりだしました。
サツキと おとうさんも、あとを おいます。
ところが、トンネルから ぬけでた ところは、
家の にわでした。
Mei dashed off into the thicket. Satsuki and Father went after her. But to
her surprise, the place she came out of the tunnel was into the backyard.
「あれえ……？」目を ぱちくりして いる
メイを 見て、サツキと おとうさんは、
わらいだしました。
"Huh...? " Satsuki and Father started laughing when they saw Mei blinking
her eyes in surprise.
「ほんとだもん。うそじや ないもん！」
メイは、いまにも なきそうです。
"It's true. I'm not lying!" Mei looked like she was about to cry.
おとうさんは、メイの かおを のぞきこんで、
やさしく いいました。「うん……。メイは
つかもり
きっと 塚森の ぬしに あったんだ。でも、
いつでも あえるとは かぎらないんだよ。
そうだ。みんなで 塚森へ あいさつに いこう。」
Father looked at Mei's face, and spoke gently, "Mei has surely met the master
of Tsuka Forest. But he can't be seen all the time. That's it. Let's all
go up to Tsuka Forest and say hello."
くらい かいだんを のぼって いくと、
大きな くすのきが 見えて きました。
When they climbed the dark steps, they came to where they could see the huge
camphor tree.
「あった！さっきの 木だよ。」メイは、
すっとんで 木の ねもとを のぞきに
いきました。
"That's it! That's the tree!" said Mei, and she went and peered at the base
of the tree.
ところが どうでしょう。たしかに あった
はずの あなが、なくなって いろのです。
But to her surprise, what did she find? The hole she expected to see had
vanished.
「ほらね、いつでも あえる わけじゃ ないんだよ。」
おとうさんは、そう いって くすのきを 見あげました。
「りっぱな 木だねえ。きっと 大むかしから ここに
たって、ひとびとを 見まもって くれて いるんだね。
さあ、あいさつを しよう。」
"Like I said, he can't always be found." said Father, looking up at the tree.
"This is a splendid tree, isn't it? Surely it's been standing here from long,
long ago, watching over all the people. Well, let's give it a greeting."
さんにん
三人は、くすのきの まえに ならび、ぺこりと あたまを
さげました。
「メイが おせわに なりました。これからも よろしく
おねがいします。」
The three of them lined up in front of the tree and humbly bowed their heads.
"We owe you thanks about Mei. Please also give us any help you can in the
future."
その よる、サツキは、おかあさんに 手がみを
かきました。
『おかあさん、きょうは とても すごい ニュースが
あるんです。メイが トトロに あいました。

That evening, Satsuki wrote a letter to her mother.
"Mother, today I have very wonderful news for you. Mei has met Totoro.

サツキが とけいを 見ながら いいました。
大がくに いった おとうさんが、そろそろ かえって
くる じかんです。
「そうだ。むかえに いこう。」
One evening, it began to rain. "Daddy didn't take his umbrella," said Satsuki,
looking at her watch. Father had gone to the university but it was almost
time for him to come home.
"That's right. Let's go meet him."
バスていに いくと、いつもの バスが きました。
でも、おとうさんは、のって いません。
「どう したんだろう……。きっと つぎの バスなんだ。」
サツキが いいました。
The usual bus arrived just after they got to the bus stop. But Father was
not on it.
"What could have happened? I'm sure he'll be on the next bus," said Satsuki.
つぎの バスが くるまでには、ずいぶん じかんが あります。
でも、ふたりは、ここで まつことに しました。
It was a long time before the next bus would come. But they decided to wait
there.
その うち、メイは、たった まま うとうと いねむりを
はじめました。もう、すっかり まちくたびれて
しまったのです。
As they did this, Mei began to doze off as she stood. She was already completely
tired of waiting.
「あーあ、しようが ないなあ。」
サツキが メイを おんぶして、だあれも いない
バスていで じっと バスを まちつづけます。
"Oh well, there's nothing else I can do."
Satsuki lifted Mei onto her back and patiently continued waiting at the empty
bus stop.
いつの まにか 日も くれて、あたりは
まっくら。サツキは、こころぼそく なって
きました。
Before she knew it, the sun had gone down and it was black all around. Satsuki
was starting to get discouraged.
あし
ひた、ひた、ひた……。足おとが ちかづいて
きて、だれかが となりにたちました。

だれだろう……。よこ目で 見ると、かさの
なが け
かげから 長い つめの 毛むくじゃらの
足が。にんげんじゃ ない！
Thud thud, thud.... Footsteps approached, and suddenly someone was beside
them. Who could it be...? Katsuki glanced sideways from under the umbrella,
and saw long claws on a hairy foot. It wasn't human!
サツキは、おそるおそる かさを あげて、
となりを みました。
Satsuki fearfully raised the umbrella and looked beside her.
もしかして、トトロ……？
Could it be Totoro?
サツキは、どきどきしながら、もういちど
見ました。
Satsuki, with her heart pounding, looked again.
トトロに ちがい ない！トトロに あっちゃった！
トトロは あたまに はすの はっぱを のせ、
ずぶぬれで たって います。
It had to be Totoro! She had finally met Totoro! Totoro was standing with
a lotus leaf on his head, getting soaking wet.
「そうだ。これ、かして あげる。」
サツキは、おとうさんの かさをさ しだしました。
"I see your problem. Here, I'll lend you this," said Satsuki, and she held
out Father's umbrella.
それを うけとったものの、トトロは、ぱかーんと
して います。
Even though Totoro took the umbrella, he just stared blankly at it.
かさなんて、見た ことが なかったのです。
He had never seen an umbrella before.
「こう やって つかうのよ。」
サツキが じぶんの かさを もちあげて みせると、
トトロも まねを して かさを さしました。
"You use it like this," said Satsuki, holding up her umbrella to show him,
and Totoro, copying her, also raised his umbrella.

ぱらぱら、ぼろん。トトロの かさに、木のはから

雨の しずくが おちます。
Patter, patter, plop. Rain was dripping off the tree leaves unto Totoro's
umbrella.
ぱらぱらぱん、ばろろんろん。これは すてきな
ねいろだ！ トトロは、かさを がっきだと
おもって いるのです。
Patter patter plish, plop-plop plop. What a wonderful sound it was! Totoro
was thinking of the umbrella as a musical instrument.
「ぐふ~~~、ぐふふ~~~。」
トトロは うれしそうに わらうと、ぴょーんと
とびあがりました。
"Guh...., Guhuhuh..." laughed Totoro happily, and with a "boing" he leaped
into the air.
どーん！
じめんが ゆれて、まわりの 木から いちどに
雨だれが おちて きます。
Whomp!
The ground shook, and rain came down all at once from the trees around them.
ばばばばばっ、ぼろろろん。
トトロは、大よろこび。
Patterpatterpatter, plopplopplop.
Totoro was overjoyed.
「ぐぉ~~~~！」
その 大きな さけびごえで、メイが 目を
さましました。
"GOOOOOOH!"
At this enormous shout, Mei opened her eyes.
その とき。くらやみの むこうに、
ひかり
光が 見えました。ようやく バスが きたようです。
Just then, from out of the darkness they could see lights. It looked like
the bus had finally come.
いいえ、バスじゃ ありません。ネコです。
いいえ、バス です。ものすごく 大きな
ネコの バス。
No, it wasn't a bus. It was a cat. No, a bus. A terribly huge cat-bus.
ネコバスは、バスていの まえで とまりました。

そして、 大きな 目で、サツキと メイを
み
じろりと 見て、にか――っと わらったでは
ありませんか。
The Catbus stopped in front of the bus stop. As it stared at Satsuki and
Mei with its big eyes, didn't it have a wiiide grin?
さすがの ふたりも これには びっくり。
こえも でません。
Even this experienced pair was surprised at this. They didn't even make a
sound.
トトロが、なにかを さしだしました。それは、
ささの はで くるんで、りゅうのひげで しばって
ある 小さな つつみでした。
Totoro held out something. It was a little package wrapped in bamboo-grass
leaves and tied with dragon-whisker grass.
メイが うけとると、トトロは ネコバスに
じゅうにほん あし
のりこみました。十二本の 足を ざわざわ
うごかし、ネコバスは すごい スピードで
はやし
はしりだします。林を ぬけ、畑を こえて……。
As soon as Mei took it, Totoro boarded the Catbus. It set off running at
an amazing speed, rustling its twelve legs as it went. Through the forest
and over the fields....
あっと いう まに 見えなく なって しまいました。
Quicker than you could say "ah" it vanished completely from sight.
「トトロ、おとうさんの かさ、もって いちゃった…。」
サツキが、ぽかーんと した まま つぶやきました。
"Oh no, Totoro went off with Daddy's umbrella," murmured Satsuki as she continued
to stare blankly.
それから なん日か して、おかあさんの ところに、
サツキからの 手がみが とどきました。
A few days later, a letter from Satsuki arrived at their mother's room..
『おかあさん、まだ むねが どきどき して
いるくらいです。とても ふしぎで、ぶきみで、
たのしい 一日でした。
"Mommy, it feels like my heart is still pounding. It was the most strange,
weird, and fun day.
いえ こ
家に かえって つつみを あけて みると、木のみが
いっぱい はいって いました。 ……おうちの にわが、
森に なったら すてきなので、にわに まく ことに
しました。でも、なかなか めが でません。
"When we took home the package and opened it, we found it was packed full
of tree nuts. ...It would be wonderful to make our garden into a forest,
so we decided to sow the nuts there. But, they just won't sprout.
メイは、まい日、まだ でない、まだ でないと
いって います。まるで、さるかにがっせんの かにに
なったみたい。
"Every day, Mei says, 'Not yet, not yet.' It seems like she's getting as
crabby as the crabs in the story of 'The Monkey-Crab Battle.'
[Note: 'The Monkey-Crab Battle' is a famous Japanese fable in which a family
of baby crabs fight a cruel monkey.]
もう すぐ なつやすみです。早く げんきに なって
ください。』
"Soon it will be summer vacation. Please get well soon."
どんどこ、どんどこ。どんどことっと……。
ある ばん、サツキとメイは、ふしぎな ものおとで
目を さましました。
どんどこ、どんどこ。どんどことっと……。
Tum tum tum. Tum tum tum. Tum tattatum..
One night, Satsuki and Mei were awakened by strange sounds.
Tum tum tum. Tum tum tum. Tum tattatum..
トトロです。トトロが みんなで、にわに きて いろのです。
「トトロ、かさ さしてる。」
「うん。木のみ まいた ところを あるいてるね。」
ふたりは、はだしの まま とびだしました。
It was Totoro. All the totoros had come into the garden.
"Totoro is using the umbrella."
"Uh-huh. He's walking around where we planted the nuts, isn't he?"
The two of them rushed out just as they were, with bare feet.
どんどこ、どんどこ。
トトロたちは、おとに あわせて、しゃがんだり
のびあがったり して います。サツキとメイも
まねしました。
Tum tum tum. Tum tum tum.
All of the totoros were squatting down and stretching up in time with the
sound. Satsuki and Mei did the same thing.
大トトロは、じめんから なにかを ひきだすように、
ちから
力を こめて おきあがり、「ぷあっ！」
そら
と いきを はきながら、空へ のびあがります。
It was as if Big Totoro was pulling something from the ground, putting power
into his upward motion, letting out his breath with a "PAH!" as he stretched
up to the heavens.
しゃがんで、ぐーーーっと 力を こめて、「ぷあっ！」
その こえと ともに、小さな めが、ぽこっと
かおを だしました。
Squatting, he grunted with effort, "GUUUUH!" and at the moment he gasped
"PAH!" the tiny sprouts popped out all at once.
「わあっ！」
サツキとメイも 力いっぱい のびあがりました。
すると、その うごきに つられるように、めが
ぐぐーーーっと 大きく なって いくでは
ありませんか。
"Wow!" Satsuki and Mei also stretched up with all their strength. As they
did, weren't the sprouts growing bigger and bigger, as if they were being
pulled up by the motion?
しゃがんでは のび、しゃがんでは のび、
どんどこ、どんどこ 大きく なあれ！
Squat down and stretch up, squat down and stretch up, tum tum tum, tum tum
tum, grow bigger and bigger!
き そら
木は、空に むけて、ぐんぐん えだや はっぱを
しげらせます。
The trees, pointing to the sky, steadily put out branches and leaves.
き き いっぽん
やがて、木と 木が とけあって、一本の 大きな
大きな 木に なりました。
Soon, the trees fused into one, forming a single big, BIG tree.
すると、大トトロが こまを とりだし、びゅわっと
なけました。
When that happened, Big Totoro pulled out a top and cast it down with a "vroom!"
大きな こまが、いきおいよく まわります。
The big top spun very vigorously.
大トトロは、ひょいと その 上に のると、にかっと
わらいました。“おいで”と いって いるのです。
Big Totoro, with a big grin, suddenly jumped onto it. "Come on!" he "said".
みんなは、つぎつぎに 大トトロに とびつきました。
ういーん。
One by one they all jumped onto Totoro. Whee!
かぜ
こまは うなりながら、風に のって 空へ まいあがります。
As the top roared, they were whirled up into the sky, riding on the wind.
「どぉ~~~、どろろろろ……。ごぉ~~~っ。」
大トトロが ほえます。なんて すてきな よる！
サツキとメイも おもいっきり ほえました。
「メイ、わたしたち 風に なってる！」
"Doooh, dorororo... GOOOH!" roared Totoro.
What a wonderful night! Satsuki and Mei also roared with all their might.
"Mei, we're becoming the wind!"
そう、大トトロの こえこそ、風の おとだったのです。
So it was, for Totoro's roar was the sound of the wind.
それから、塚森の 大くすの てっぺんで、オカリナを
ふきました。ほー ほー。ほー ほー。ほー ほー ほー。
After this, they played ocarinas on the top of the big Camphor Tree of Tsuka
Forest. Whoo, whoo. Whoo, whoo. Whoo, whoo, whoo.
しずかな よるに、オカリナの おとが ひびきます。
いえ
家では おとうさんが、こんやは、ふくろうが よく
なくなあと おもって いる ことでしょう。
The noise of the ocarinas resounded in the peaceful night. At home, their
father probably was thinking that a lot of owls were hooting.
つぎの あさ。ふたりは、とびおきて にわを 見ました。
「あれえ、木が ない。」
「ゆめだったのかな……。」
The next morning, they practically flew outside to look in the garden.
"Hey, the tree isn't there!"
"I guess it was just a dream..."
ところが、よく 見ると、あさの 光に 小さな めが、
きらきら かがやいて いるでは ありませんか。
「うわあ、やったー！」
「ゆめだけど、ゆめじゃ なかったんだ！」
But then, when they looked more closely, weren't those tiny sprouts sparkling
and glistening in the morning light?
"Yay, we did it!"
"It wasn't just a dream! It was dream, but not a dream!"
ふたりは、大よろこびで はねまわりました。
The two girls jumped around with great joy.
第四章 まいごの メイ
Chapter 4: Mei is Lost
なつやすみに なりました。きょうは、ふたりで
て
おばあちゃんの お手つだい。
Summer vacation had begun. Today, the two of them were helping the little
old granny.
とうもろこしに きゅうりに トマト……。あした かえって
くる おかあさんに、しんせんな やさいを たべさせて
あげる ためです。
Corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes... Tomorrow, Mother was coming home and they
would give her fresh vegetables to eat.
ふた
「だいぶ よく なったから、二ばん だけ おうちに
かえれるんだって。」
"She's gotten a lot better, so she's able to come home in only two nights."
サツキも メイも、うれしくて たまらないと いう
かお です。
Both Satsuki and Mei looked like they could hardly contain their happiness.
おばあちゃんも にこにこ うなずきました。
Granny also smiled and nodded.
「それじゃあ、どんどん たべて げんきに なって
はたけ
もらわにゃ。ばあちゃんの 畑の ものは、お日さま
いーっぱい あびてる からね、からだに いいんだよ。」
"We must make sure she eats plenty of these to get well. Things from my field
have soaked up the sunshine, so they're very healthy."
「メイ、じぶんで とった とうもろこし あげようっと！」
"I'm going to take her some corn I picked myself!" said Mei.
そこへ、カン太が、でんぽうを もって はしって きました。
Kanta came running up with a telegram.
しちこくやま
それは、おかあさんの いる 七国山びょういんからでした。
It was from the Shichikokuyama Hospital where Mother had gone.
「おかあさんに なにか あったんだわ。おとうさんに
しらせなきゃ。」
"Something has happened to Mommy. We have to tell Daddy."
サツキは、カン太の あんないで、てんわを かりに
いきました。とうもろこしを かかえた まま、メイも
サツキたちを おいかけます。
Satsuki, with Kanta guiding, went to borrow a phone. Mei, still holding an
ear of corn in her arms, ran after them.
大がくに でんわを すろと、おとうさんは いいました。
「わかった。すぐ びょういんに でんわして みるよ。
そしたら ようすを おしえて あげるから、そこで
またせて もらいなさい。」
When she called the university, Father said, "All right. I'll try phoning
the hospital right away. Wait right there because I may be able to get more
information."
（おかあさん、どう しちゃったんだろう。
だいじょうぶかしら。）
サツキは、どきどきしながら おとうさんから
でんわが かかって くるのを まちました。
"Oh Mommy, what could have happened? I hope you're all right." thought Satsuki,
her heart pounding as she waited for her father's return call.
メイが ようやく やって きた とき、サツキは
おとうさんの でんわも すんで、とぼとぼ あるいて いる
ところでした。
When Mei finally got there, Satsuki was just on the phone with Father, and
then they started trudging down the road.
「おかあさん、かぜ ひいちゃったから、かえって くるののばすって。」
"They say Mommy has caught a cold, so her coming home is postponed."
サツキの ことばに、メイは たちどまり, さけびました。
「やだっ！」
At Satsuki's words, Mei stood still and yelled. "No!"
「しかたないでしょ。むりして びょうきが おもくなったら、たいへんだもの。」
"There's nothing we can do about it. Overdoing would make her sickness worse,
and that would be awful."
それでも メイは ききません。「やだ――っ！」メイの わからずや。
But Mei still would not listen. "NOOOO!" She was stubborn.
サツキは、かっと して どなりつけました。
「おかあさんが しんじゃっても いいのね。ばか ばかっ！
メイなんか もう しらない！」
Satsuki flew into a rage and yelled back "It would be all right with you
if she even died, then? Stupid, stupid! When you're like this I don't even
want to know you!"
「おねえちゃんの ばかあ。」
メイは、大ごえで なきだしました。
"You're the one who's stupid!" yelled Mei, and she started crying loudly.
ゆうがたちかくに なって、おばあちゃんが
手つだいに きて くれました。
It was getting late in the afternoon when Granny came over to help.
「げんき だしなって。おとうさんは
びょういんに よるって いうんだし、
かぜなんか すぐ なおるよ。」
おばあちゃんは、おこめを とぎながら、
サスキを なぐさめます。
"Cheer up. Your father said he'll visit the hospital, and she'll get over
that nasty old cold right away," said Granny, comforting Satsuki as she washed
the rice
「まえも そうだったの。かぜみたいな
もんだから、ちょっと にゅういんする
だけだって……。おかあさん、しんじゃうかも……。」
"That's what they said before. It seemed like a cold and she'd only be in
the hospital a short time... Mommy might even die..."
みるみる うちに、サツキの 目から なみだが
あふれだしました。
As she looked intently at the house, Satsuki's eyes brimmed over with tears.
「だいじょうぶだよ。なくで ねえ、なくて ねえ。」
"She'll be all right. Don't cry, don't cry."
いくら なぐさめても、サスキは なくばかりです。
メイが、その ようすを じっと 見て いました。
In spite of this comfort, Satsuki kept crying. Mei was steadily watching
her.
やがて メイは、とうもろこしを だきしめ、
けっしん したように 家を でて いきました。
Not long after, Mei left the house looking very determined, clutching the
corn in her arms.
サツキたちが、メイが いない ことに
気づいたのは、日も かたむきかけた ころでした。
When Satsuki and Granny noticed that Mei was gone, it was getting late in
the day.
「さっき、メイと けんかしたの。あの 子、
おかあさんの びょういんに いったのかも
しれない。さがして くる。」
サツキが いいました。
"A while ago, Mei and I had a quarrel. She might have gone to Mommy's hospital.
I'm going to look for her." said Satsuki.
おばあちゃんも 大あわてです。
「カン太、みんなに しらせろ。メイちゃんが
いなく なっちゃったん だよ。」
Granny too was very flustered. "Kanta, tell everyone! Little Mei has disappeared!"
「メイー、メイー。」
しちこくやま みち
サツキは、七国山への 道を はしって いきました。
あう 人ごとに きいて みましたが、メイを 見た
人は いません。メイは、きっと、びょういんへ いく
とちゅうで まいごに なったのです。
"Meiii! Meiii!" called Satsuki, running down the road to Shichikokuyama.
She asked everyone she saw, but no-one had seen Mei. No doubt Mei had gotten
lost on the way to the hospital.
(メイ、どこに いるの。 わたしの せいだ。わたしが あんな
ひどい こと いったから……。)
(Mei, where did you go? It's my fault. I said such a mean thing to you...)
ゆうやけぐもを 見つめ、サツキは なきたく なりました。
サツキが もと きた 道を ひきかえして いくと、
カン太が やって きました。
Satsuki felt like crying when she stared at the sunset sky. As she was returning
on the road, Kanta came up.
「カンちゃん、メイ いた？」
サツキが たずねると、カン太は くびを よきに ふって
いいました。
"Kanta, is Mei back?" asked Satsuki, and Kanta shook his head.
しちこくやま
「おれが 七国山へ いって やるから、おまえは もどれ。
しんいけ ちい おんな こ
神池で、 小さい 女の 子の サンダルが 見つかったんだ。」
"I came toward Shichikokoyama to tell you to come back. They found a little
girl's sandal in Shinike Pond."
「ええっ！」
"Oh no!"
「メイちゃんのか どうかは…。」
"We wanted to ask if it could be Mei's."
はや
カン太が いうより 早く、サツキは はしりだしました。
Satsuki started running before Kanta finished speaking.
メイ、メイ、しなないで！
あし
サツキの 足は かわが むけ、ちが にじんで います。
サツキは サンダルを ぬいで、はだしで はしりつづけました。
Mei, Mei, don't die! Satsuki's feet were blistered and bleeding. She took
off her sandals and kept on running barefoot.
はしって はしって、 ようやく 神池に つくと、池にはおおぜいの 人が あつまって いました。
She ran and ran, finally reaching Shinike Pond where a large crowd had gathered.
サツキの すがたを 見ると、おばあちゃんが、小さな
サンダルを もって かけよって きました。
「これ、これだよ。」
When she saw Satsuki coming, Granny ran to her with a small sandal. "Here,
here it is."
おばあちゃんの 手は、ぶるぶる ふるえて います。
Granny's hands were shivering and trembling.
サツキは、サンダルを 見つめました。
Satsuki looked intently at the sandal.
「メ、メイのじゃ ない。」
サツキは、その ばに へなへなと しゃがみこみました。
"No, it's not M-Mei's." said Satsuki, slumping down in exhaustion.
よかった。でも、メイはどこ？ どう したら
いいの？ いろいろな ことが、あたまの 中を
かけめぐります。
That was a relief. But where was Mei? What should she do now? All sorts of
things ran through her head.
つかもり
ふと かおを あげると、塚森の 大くすが
見えました。
Suddenly she looked up, and she could see the great Camphor Tree of Tsuka
forest.
そうだ、トトロが いる。サツキは、さいごの
ちから
力を ふりしばり、しげみの トンネルへと
はしりました。
Of course. Totoro was there. Satsuki ran, squeezing out the last drop of
her strength, to the thicket where the "tunnel" was.
いつか メイが トトロに あった、あの
トンネルです。
That is, the tunnel where Mei had met Totoro once before.
「おねがい、トトロに あわせて。メイが
まいごなの。」
サツキは しげみに よびかけると、トンネルに
とびこんで いきました。
"Oh please, take me to Totoro. Mei is lost," called Satsuki to the thicket,
and she plunged into the tunnel.
あか ひかり
くらい トンネルの むこうに、赤い 光が
見えます。サツキは、光に むかって
はしりました。
At the other end of the dark tunnel she could see a red light. She ran towards
it.
なにかに つまずき、ころんだと おもった
とたん、光の 中へ まっさかさま。ぽよーんと
やわらかい ところに おちました。
She tripped on something and thought she was going to fall, but at that instant
she went right through the center of the light. She landed with a "boing"
on something soft.
トトロの おなかの 上です。
She was on top of Totoro's stomach.
「トトロ！ メイを さがして。おねがいっ！」
すると、トトロの 大きな 手が、サツキを
だきあげました。
"Totoro! I'm looking for Mei! Please help!" When she said this, Totoro held
her up in his big paws.
「ぶぉろろろろ……。」
さけびごえと ともに 風が まきおこり、
ふわっと からだが うきあがります。
サツキは、トトロの かかえられた まま、
大くすの てっぺんまで とびあがって いました。
"BUORORORORO!..." he roared as loud as the wind. His feather-light body floated
up into the air. Satsuki, still carried in his arms, was carried in a bound
to the top of the huge Camphor Tree.
「ぐお～～～っ！」
ちから
トトロが 力いっぱい ほえると、とおくで なにかが
こたえました。
"GUOOOOH!" When Totoro gave a powerful roar, something answered from a long
way off.
「ふぎゃ～～～お！」
ネコバスです。ゆうやみの 中、ネコバスが すごい
いきおいで こちらへ はしって きます。
"MEOOOOW!" It was the Catbus. It came running towards them with amazing energy.
あちこちに、メイを さがっして くれて いる
むら ひと み
村の 人たちの すがたが 見えました。
Here and there, one could see the forms of village people who were helping
to look for Mei.
ひと め
その 人たちの 目の まえを、ネコバスが びゅわっと
よこぎります。ところが どうでしょう。だれも、気づいた
ようすは ありません。
The Catbus went by right before their eyes. But how could this be? Nobody
noticed it.
み
「みんなには 見えないんだわ。」
つかもり
おどろいて いる あいだに、ネコバスは 塚森を
かけのぼり、サツキたちの まえで とまりました。
"Nobody can see it." said Satsuki in amazement, and while she was saying
this the Catbus ran up the Tsuka forest tree and stopped in front of them.
トトロが、“さあ、おのり”と いうように
うなずきました。
"Ok now, get on", Totoro's nod seemed to say.
サツキは、どきどきしながら ネコバスに のりらした。
け
ゆかも いすも ふんわり ふかふか、 ねこの 毛です。
いきさきは、「めい」。ネコバスは どおっと
はしりだしました。
Satsuki got on the Catbus with her heart pounding. The floor and seats were
soft and fluffy, covered with cat fur. The destination sign read "Mei." Suddenly
it began running.
た はやし
田んぼを 林を ネコバスは すばらしい はやさで
うえ
かけぬけます。でんせんの 上だって へっちゃらです。
Through field and forest it ran with astounding speed. It even ran on top
of the telephone wires.
その ころ、メイは、とおくの おじぞうさまの
ところで、しょんぼりして いました。
もう、つかれきって いるのです。
About then, Mei was by a far-away Jizo statue, feeling discouraged. She was
already worn out.
[Note: Jizo is the Buddhist guardian of children and travelers.]
「メイ――。」
サツキが よんだような 気がして、メイは
たちあがりました。
"Meiii--" It seemed to Mei that she could hear Satsuki calling, and she stood
up.

こらえて いた なみだが、いっぺんに
あふれました。
"Satsuki! Satsuki." The tears she had been holding back overflowed all at
once.
「メイ、ここよーっ！」
こえの そる ほうを 見あげて びっくい。
あんまり びっくりして、なみだも とまって
しまいました。
"Mei, here I am!" Mei looked up in surprise at where the voice was coming
from. She was so surprised that she completely stopped crying.
だって、サツキを おせた ネコバスが、いきなり
でんせんから とびおりて きたのですから。
The reason was that the Catbus, with Satsuki inside, suddenly leaped down
from the telephone wires.
「メイ！」
「おねえちゃん！」
ふたりは、しっかりと だきあいました。
"Mei!"
"Satsuki!"
The two hugged each other tightly.
「おかあさんに、とうもろこしを とどける
つもりだったのね。」
"You just wanted to take the corn to Mommy, didn't you?"
サツキの ことばに、メイは うなずきました。
Mei nodded at Satsuki's words.
いつの まにか、ネコバスの いきさきが
かわって いました。
Before they noticed it, the Catbus had changed its destination sign.
しちこくやま
「七国山びょういん……。おかあさんの びょういんへ
いって くれるの？ ありがとう！」
"Shichikokuyama Hospital.... You mean, you'll take us to Mommy's hospital?
Thank you!"
サツキが とびつくと、ネコバスは のどを
ごろごろ ならしました。
When Satsuki jumped up and embraced it, the Catbus purred.
七国山へ しゅっぱーつ。
のはらも 山も ひとっとび。
They were off to Shichikokuyama. They bounded over fields and mountains.
ネコバスは、びょういんの にわの、木の 上で
とまりました。まどから、おとうさんと おかあさんの
すがたが 見えす。
The catbus stopped in a tree in the garden of the hospital . They could see
Father and Mother through the window.
サツキが あんしんしたように いいました。
「おかあさん、げんきそうだね。」
Satsuki said, sounding relieved, "Mommy looks like she's doing all right,
doesn't she?"
「うん。おとうさんと いっしょに わらってるよ。」
"Uh-huh. She and Daddy are laughing together."
「さあ、かえらなくちゃ。きっと、みんな しんぱい
してるわ。」
"Well, I guess we have to go home. Everyone's surely worried about us."
びょうしつに、さわやかな 風が ふきこみました。
In the hospital room, a refreshing breeze blew in.
「あら？」
おかあさんが ふりむきました。
「いま、サツキと メイの こえが したみたい。」
"What was that?"
Mother looked around.
"Just now, it seemed like I heard Satsuki and Mei."
ふと 見ると、まどべに とうもろこしが おいて
あります。おとうさんは、それを 手に とって
いいました。
Suddenly they saw an ear of corn left near the window. Father picked it up
and said,
「きっと そうだよ。ほらね。」
"You certainly did. Look!"
(On the corn is written: おかあさんへ, "To Mommy")
ネコバスに ゆらゆら ゆられ、ふたりは うちに
かえりました。
The two returned home, swaying back and forth inside the Catbus.
「どうも ありがとう。」
「ばいばーい、またねえ。」
"Thank you very much."
"Bye-bye, see you later."
にかっと わらうと ネコバスは、よ空に
すいこまれるように きえて いきました。
As they waved and smiled, the Catbus vanished as if it were sucked into the
night sky.
むこうから、おばあちゃんと カン太が やって
きます。
From across the way, Granny and Kanta were coming.
「おばあちゃーん！」
メイがはしりだしました。
"Graaanny!"
Mei started running.
「よかったねえ、よかったねえ。しんぱいした
んだよ……。」
おばあちゃんは、なみだぐんで メイを
だきしめます。
"I'm glad to see you, glad to see you. I was so worried..." said Granny,
tearfully holding Mei tight.
「カンちゃん、ありがとう。」
サツキの ことばに、カン太は てれくさそうに、
わらいました。
"Thank you, Kanta." At Satsuki's words, Kanta smiled, seeming embarrassed.
ほー、ほー、ほー。
こんやも、トトロたちが オカリナを ふいて
います。
Whoo, whoo, whoo. The Totoros were playing their ocarinas again that night.
ほしの きれいな よるでした。
It was a beautiful starry night.
